Living in the Goodness of God

by Peggy Burns, Director, LMFT

What you believe about God’s goodness will set the stage to impact every aspect of your life and define your future.  In light of the devastating fires in California and mass shootings I hesitated to write about the goodness of God lest you think my view is Pollyannaish or one that lacks care.  Yet, the greatest gift we can give ourselves during these times of extreme trial is to anchor not only our minds but our will to a firm and stable foundation.  This foundation being – the goodness of God!

The Scriptures don’t just reveal God does good things – they repeat over and over again God is good!  It is not just the good things God does for us but at His very essence He is good.  And this good God of the universe is never changing.

Believing in the goodness of God wars against despair, depression and the pit of hopelessness.  When you are able to ‘taste and see’ His goodness you strengthen your immunity to mental and emotional anguish.

No matter how bad the storm is, no matter how much pain we experience, no matter how different the outcome is from what we prayed for, we become carriers of hope when we have faith that God is good.  I can personally attest to in the hardest moments of life, God comes close to us and He doesn’t change, He doesn’t falter, He never quits and for sure He never leaves us or lets us go.

During this Thanksgiving season I want to encourage you to become carriers of hope. Meditating on the following Scriptures sheds God’s light on His goodness.

O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting. I Chronicles 16:34

I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.  Psalm 27:13

How great is Your goodness, Which You have stored up for those who fear You, Which You have wrought for those who take refuge in You, Before the sons of men! You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of man; You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues.  Psalm 31:19-20

Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.  Psalm 34:8

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.  Psalm 84:11

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him.  Matthew 7:11

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.  James 1:17
