The Elimination of Hurry

John Mark Comer, in his book, “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” gives this experience a name– “Hurry Sickness”. Taken from his book, here are the ten symptoms of “hurry sickness”. If these symptoms ring true for you I highly recommend reading his book to gain practical ways of fighting hurry.

- Lack of care for your body
- Escapist behaviors
- Slippage of Spiritual Disciplines
Answering yes to several of these 10 symptoms is an indicator you would benefit from making changes in your life in order to experience more love, joy, and peace.
In John Mark’s book he gives 3 antidotes to the dilemma of hurry.
1. Sabbath rest – A lack of rest and schedules that never empty suffocate our souls. Taking one day a week to disconnect from work and our phones begins the journey of moving towards God and His rest. Disconnecting can be a painful change at first but the rewards are worth it. The beauty of a Sabbath day is not just in disconnecting but in connecting to God, nature, friends and family and the most meaningful things of life.
2. Simplicity – We live in a culture of accumulation of more money, more clothes and more things to fill our home. We need to ask ourselves are we reflecting Jesus and who he wants us to be? Simplicity can be freeing as we intentionally prioritize the things that really matter and eliminate the extra stuff!
3. Slowing – is the thoughtful decision throughout your days to actively resist the temptation to constantly rush and be in a hurry. Stress happens when we move fast and miss the important moments with God and others. It’s ok to give yourself permission to slow down and smell the coffee.
